The Cisco SPA 301 model is a 1 line IP phone solution that is ideal for small business or home offices. It can work and connect directly to on-site phone system or to a hosted IP private branch exchange (PBX). It is intended to work in conjunction with the Cisco Unified Communication 500 series. It supports two major communication protocols namely: Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Smart Phone Control Protocol (SPCP). It’s one of the most basic and affordable IP phones available on the market today

As a SIP based phone, the Cisco SPA 301 allows users to enjoy the advantage of IP telephony, while at the same time making use of various features that are common in traditional phone sets. Basic phone features include call blocking, call forwarding, call swap, call back on busy, call pickup, call waiting, call transfer, and music on hold. The call blocking feature can either be anonymous blocking or selective call blocking, giving users more flexibility. The Cisco SPA 301 also has provision for three-way call conferencing, group paging and intercom. Call loggings are integrated with the Cisco SPA 301, which can store call duration and start time. These logs are viewable via a web-based graphical user interface. A personalised touch is added through the use of multiple ring tones and selectable ring tones per line

Configuration and administration of the Cisco SPA 301 is done at different user levels for better security. Even an attempt to restore to factory default settings can be controlled via the administrator password. In most cases, administration is done through the web server. Event logging and system logs are recorded automatically for quick monitoring and report generation. Even voice communications are protected through the use of strict encryption algorithm such as a 256 bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Other security features include HTTPS with factory installed client certificate and HTTP digest, which is an encrypted authentication routine done through MD5

The Cisco SPA 301 comes with the standard 12 button dial pad for that familiar, traditional look. Controls and buttons are conveniently located around the phone, including the volume control, flash button and redial button. The sleek handset allows high quality voice communication. This IP phone draws power from a 5 VDC switching power adaptor that is included in the package. For connection to an IP network, the Cisco SPA 301 is provided with one Ethernet WAN 10/100 Base T port
