The main distinction between the two phones is that the SNOM 870 has a larger TFT display and is touch screen

We are yet to be convinced that the touch screen is a required feature.   For some things,  you have to use the touchscreen, which in our opinion, would be better facilitated by the physical keys

For example:

When you press the tick in order to obtain the redial list, you can scroll through the list of contacts using the silver navigation button and select your number using the physical tick button.

However, when you use the Dir key (Ours is configured for LDAP) and scroll through the list of contacts using your silver navigation button, you have to select your contact using the touch screen.  This is not very consistent.

Currently we feel that the touch screen is a bit of a gimmic.  We're not sure that the average IP Phone user demands a touch screen in the same way that consumers rejected the Tablet PC.  If the entire user interface was touch screen rather than having a mixed physical/virtual UI then we may have had a worth while distinction between the SNOM 821 and the SNOM 870.  However, lessons would have to be taken from Apple in order to achieve their level of UI ease of use.

As it stands we feel that the SNOM 821 is the device to have as we feel that major enhancements provided by the 8xx series can be achieved from the inclusion of the the clour TFT screen. We are yet to be convinced that there is a place for an interface that is partially physical and partly touchscreen.
